As we approach the end of 2025, it’s only natural that we look back and reflect on the fun we had, special memories we made and all of the ways we’ve grown in our walk with God.
We know that it’s biblical to think back and remember what God has done in our lives. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph looked back on his suffering and saw God’s purpose in it. In Psalm 143:5, David wrote that he often reflected about what God had done in his life. Matthew 26:36-46 tells us that by remembering his purpose, Jesus embraced his coming suffering. And in 1 Timothy 1:13-14, Paul remembered his past experiences in order to highlight God’s mercy and grace.
As someone who keeps a daily journal, I don’t just write entries and forget about them. I revisit them to see how far I’ve come and think about the lessons I’ve learned. This helps me stay thankful for the present and hopeful for the future.
Similarly, we at I Am Second like to look back at the stories we’ve shared throughout the year to remind ourselves of what God has been teaching us. Here are some lessons we’ve learned from our 2025 White Chair Films.
Lesson #1: Surrender is Powerful
Early in the year, we covered a variety of topics related to surrender. From surrendering control and lies to emotions, relationships and escapes, giving every area of our lives to God gives us freedom. And a person who feels free is powerful. When we live a life surrendered to God, we are ready to be used to share his love with the world and bring him glory.
That’s what Christian music artist Terrian experienced in her life, and it’s what she shared in her White Chair Film. God kept closing doors for her until she fully surrendered to him. And once she did, God used her music in a powerful way.
Lesson #2: We Each Have a Calling
We also learned that we don’t have to be perfect for God to call us right where we are. Jase Robertson has one of the biggest platforms in the country thanks to his presence on the television show Duck Dynasty, but it wasn’t always that way. He was quiet and judgmental for much of his life and wasn’t sure how God could use him.
After an experience with a prank call, he got perspective about his calling and started to see more of the opportunities God had already given him to tell others about Jesus. We can do the same, pursuing our own calling right now. Together, we looked at how we can discover our calling, walk in it and encourage others in their walk. We are all called to share the Gospel and use the unique experiences and platforms God has given us to make his name known.
Lesson #3: Trust is Worship
We don’t have to move mountains to please God. He loves us as we are and simply wants our trust. When we allow him to direct our lives, he works in us, sanctifies us and uses us to further his kingdom. He can even use difficult circumstances to reveal our calling, as he did with Anne Wilson. Today, she’s making an amazing impact as a Christian music artist, but it started with listening to God’s voice and taking that first step of obedience.
Like Anne learned, there is purpose in pain and hope in heartache. God is always with us, even when we feel the most alone. Deuteronomy 31:6 tells us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” When we choose to worship, especially when we are hurting or don’t understand, we are building our faith.
Lesson #4: Our True Home is Heaven
Another Duck Dynasty family member, Will Robertson, shared with us in his White Chair Film about embracing his identity as both a member of the Robertson family and as an adopted child of God. His story was a powerful reminder to us all that Heaven is our home. We can see God moving in even the messiest parts of our stories and trust that he has a plan that is far greater than anything we could come up with on our own.
Lesson #5: Every Story Matters
Finally, our most recent White Chair Film highlighted Christian music artist Matthew West and his realization about the true author of his story. As Matthew learned, every human being experiences difficult circumstances and has a story to tell. That’s why Matthew is often inspired by real-life stories when he writes his songs. Our stories glorify God, even if we think it’s boring or we’re too far gone. Everyone has a story worth sharing.
From prayer and worship to surrender, breakthrough, calling and gifts, we’ve learned a lot this year about what it means to Live Second. If you haven’t seen any of the films above, I encourage you to do so and I pray that these lessons take root in your heart.
Thank you for being such an incredible part of the I Am Second community in 2025. We can’t wait to see how God will continue to teach us in 2026!
