At I Am Second, this summer is all about surrender — specifically, surrendering the areas of our lives that are hindering our spiritual growth. If you need a refresh or missed a week, here’s what we’ve looked at so far:
We’ve also put together a list of our films that tell stories of how some of your favorite Seconds learned to surrender.
As someone who was saved more than 30 years ago, I can tell you that sanctification is a process. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t figure everything out right away. (I know I sure haven’t!) God doesn’t just snap his fingers and take away all of your flaws and worries. There’s a process and a plan for everything.
The truth is, sins, addictions, mental health breakdowns and other struggles are a lot like quicksand. The more you lean on your own strength to save yourself from them, the worse it turns out. But if you learn from the stories of others and keep pursuing surrender even when you don’t see the fruits right away, you’ll be surprised at how far you go.
Surrendering Addictions and Parenting: Brian Welch
Brian Welch is also known as “Head,” the guitarist and founding member of the popular secular metal band Korn. God moved in Brian’s life in a powerful way when it came to addiction and fatherhood and he now has one of the biggest and best platforms for God’s kingdom. Having overcome 10-plus years of alcoholism, I can relate to Brian’s addiction struggles and I’ve often beaten myself up for being a poor father (which is especially common for addicts). I encourage this video for anyone interested in what Living Second is all about, as well as for those who may be struggling with addictions or bad habits.
Surrendering Fears and Anxiety: Terrian
A rising music artist who made the Top 48 of American Idol, Terrian has a passionate following of fans thanks to her deep lyrics, kind personality and top-quality songs. Before she got to where she is today, however, she had to surrender control of her career and learn to truly trust God. Her elimination on American Idol was God telling her “no” to her prayers for a time. But she soon discovered why. I love worship music and have also struggled with God saying “no” or “wait” to my prayers, so this film especially resonated with me in those areas. I recommend this film to anyone in a season of waiting.
Surrendering Obstacles and Limitations: Nick Vujicic
An Australian evangelist and motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic was born without limbs. But he didn’t let that stop him from fulfilling a powerful purpose God gave him to help others surrender their brokenness. Nick’s message and story are especially beneficial when it comes to showing how and why God wants to use what makes you different to glorify him. Obstacles and limitations are simply opportunities to show what God can do in a person’s life.
Surrendering Yourself and Your Identity: Tori Kelly
Many of us struggle with how we see ourselves. (Or, rather, how we think others see us). We focus on our perceived flaws and try to cover them up so people don’t see our “true selves.” Or we pretend to be something else and hide our identity in things and people. But God has a unique plan for each one of us that no one else could do, as is the case with Tori, another Christian music artist who was on the show American Idol. It took Tori time to truly find who she was, but once she did, she flourished.
These are just a few of our 190+White Chair Films. Topics range from marriage, purpose and pride to grief, loss, identity, anxiety, depression and more. As you aim to surrender more of your life to God moving forward, we hope these videos motivate you to keep pursuing spiritual growth and sharing the good news of the Gospel to everyone you meet.
