Do you ever feel like you’re not walking in you’re calling? You’re not alone.
Many of us feel restless and aren’t content with our current situations. We look longingly toward the future when we think circumstances will be better for God to use us. We patiently wait for him to reveal his purpose in our lives and don’t believe we can contribute in the meantime.
But have you considered that you might be walking in your calling where you are right now? All Christians have a calling to share the Gospel, but we have other callings as well.
We were created with a unique blend of God-given passions, talents and opportunities that align with his plan. The problem usually lies with perspective. We either have a different vision of our calling, or we have a timeline for it. Neither viewpoint gives much room for trusting God.
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” (Proverbs 16:9).
There is always going to be an element of faith when it comes to calling. But there are certain signs that you may already be walking in yours. Here are a few of them:
Your Work Bears Fruit
The enemy wants you to think that you aren’t making an impact for God’s kingdom, but is that really true? Take a step back, breathe and try to clear your emotions. Then look at what you’re doing from an objective viewpoint and see if what you’re doing is bearing any fruit. (If you’re unsure, a friend or family member can offer a third-party perspective.) Whether it’s in your family, your workplace, your community or somewhere else, if you’re touching lives, strengthening relationships or just planting seeds, it’s all kingdom work. Fruit isn’t always immediate, but over time you’ll be able to confirm whether you were walking in your calling.
You’re Passionate About It
When our passions and gifts align, it’s a beautiful thing — and calling is often found in the midst of them. God created you with unique interests and skills and he wants to use those interests and skills! For me, God has graciously given me the ability to write. So when I combine that with my passion for helping those struggling with addictions and mental health issues, it’s easy to see how part of my calling was to write encouraging books and articles. But I’m even more passionate about my wife and kids, who I believe are a bigger calling for my life.
You’re Doing More Than You Think You Can Do
This is one of the biggest indicators that you’re walking in your calling, in my opinion. If you’re doing something positive for God’s kingdom, but don’t know how you’re doing it on your own strength, I think that’s a sign that you are on the right path. And this is so God gets the glory he rightly deserves, not us. He wants us to rely less on our own ability and more on his.
“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”” (2 Corinthians 12:8-10).
Calling is about faithful obedience to God, right where you are. It’s really that simple. Remember that the Lord is the one who equips you for your calling. Keep seeking him, keep listening and trust that he will direct your steps.
